Saving Face With Acne Skin Care
Daryl Glenn has written Saving Face With Acne Skin Care and writes “Acne: What causes this condition that seems to chip away at the very foundations of self esteem with an almost malevolent intent? The myth is that once teenagers cross the threshold from adolescence into adulthood, the anguish caused by acne will be permanently left behind. The reality is that there is no guarantee that adulthood will offer the safe, acne-free haven that so many teens long for. Statistics indicate that 25% of the male population is plagued at some point by adult acne, while 50% of females will similarly find themselves contending with the condition as adults.
It seems that no one is exempt. Infant acne can appear on the faces babies who are only three or four weeks old, or even on the faces of newborns.
Since so many are afflicted – adult and child alike – there’s an obvious need for real information on acne skin care that cuts through all the myths and separates fact from fiction. But we can’t really talk about acne and the best approach to take regarding skin care until we know a few basics. So let’s begin at the beginning..
It all starts with sebum. Sebum is the natural oil produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands. For reasons that aren’t fully understood, the pores of the skin can become plugged with sebum, and once plugged, bacteria and dead cells can become trapped in the pores, resulting in the lesions commonly associated with acne. Here’s a good working definition: acne be defined as a condition describing blocked skin pores that result in lesions.
The most common lesions are called comedones. There are two basic varieties of comedones: ‘white heads’ and ‘black heads’. A white head is a plugged pore that has begun to bulge outward from the skin due to dead skin cells, bacteria, and other contaminants that have become trapped inside. This bulging dome shape often assumes a white appearance. Black heads are simply comedones that have become opened, exposing the dark follicle plug inside. Acne comedones are often referred to colloquially as “zits” or “pimples.”
Microcomedones are a less common form of acne lesion, sometimes referred to as papules. These are basically small comedones that form from localized cellular reactions to the processes that cause acne. They usually occur in clusters and are sometimes too small to see, but can be felt as a series of little bumps along the skin surface.
In more severe forms of acne, cysts, pustules and nodules and can form. A pustule is like a normal comedone, but larger due to a higher amount of dead white cells, or pus, trapped inside the plugged sebaceous follicle. Nodules are a more severe form of papules, extending deeper into the skin tissue and resulting in large raised legions that are usually inflamed, and painful to touch. Cysts are very large fluid filled sacs that can result from pustules or nodules. Though none of these forms of acne are dangerous or life threatening, they can leave scars and are sometimes very disfiguring.
What about acne causes? This is a question that scientists and doctors still haven’t been able to completely agree upon. Today, most theories seem to point to a combination of factors that include genetics, hormone changes, and stress. For years it was thought that diet was a strong component to acne, but most evidence today suggests that hormones and stress are more likely to be the culprits.
Almost everyone will have some form of acne in their lives. Most people get acne during their teenage years, associated with the massive hormone changes that occur during puberty. It is equally common to men and women, and usually occurs in facial regions. However, acne can begin or persist at any stage in adult life, and can sometimes occur on the back, neck, arms and legs.
The good news is that the situation regarding acne and acne skin care is by no means hopeless. Effective acne treatment exists. And while it might not be realistic to expect some sort of magical acne cure, there are ways to effectively tackle the problem. If you follow the easy to implement acne tips and information you find here, there’s a good possibility you’ll be able to minimize your breakouts or avoid them altogether.

Cute Shoes and Now Adorable Clothing
by Nicole
Robeez aren’t news, are they? Everyone has heard of Robeez’ shoes, or so it seems. But did you know that Robeez is a Canadian company? It all started in 1994 when mom Sandra Wilson was downsized right out of a job. We all love a mom-trepreneur success story, right? Sandra’s story is an inspiration. Living in the great white north (the very southern part of the north, mind you), my babe and his buddies wear the shoes in the spring and summer, and the booties in the winter. Robeez has recently ventured into the apparel market and they’re doing a bang up job of it. Robeez sent my little monkey the monkey apparel gift set for review and it’s awesome!
I know I’m reviewing Robeez’ new apparel line here, but I just have to put a plug in for their footwear as well. I have, in my 8 incredible months of motherhood, received or purchased 6 pairs or Robeez shoes and/or boots and will continue to buy them until my son no longer fits into them. Luckily, that means we get to enjoy them until he’s four years old! They stay on his feet like no other product. In fact, in one of our baby groups we refer to them as “really cute sock holder onners.” I also like that they really fit for the whole 6 months stated on the size tag. They stay on easily when they’re a little large and continue to go on easily as little feet start to fill them to the seams.
The one suggestion I have to regarding the Robeez apparel line? Make it in Canada. It’s made in India. Not that I don’t love the Indians. I do. I even married one. And you can’t beat a good Indian meal. I would prefer, however, to buy a product that is made in Canada by a Canadian company, and would even pay more for it if necessary.
For every pair of shoes or booties purchased on Robeez websites in North America, Europe, and Australia, a pair of shoes or booties will be donated to a child in need through Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) To date the Robeez Heart & Sole program has donated over 95,000 pairs of shoes and booties, a donation that would stretch almost 8 miles or 12.5 kilometers almost three times the height of Mount Everest if laid heel to toe. Robeez regularly provides shoes to children in China, Russia, Romania, Ethiopia, and throughout North America. What’s better than giving while you get some of the cutest outfits available for your kids?

Coming Clean About Burt’s Bees Deep Pore Scrub
by Izzy

We recently reviewed another Burt’s Bees product on Props and Pans and it was quite favorable but this time around, I have to give a big thumbs down to the Burt’s Bees Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub. I tried to like it. I wanted to like it… But alas, I just couldn’t.For starters, there is not enough of the scrubby stuff (finely ground peach stone) for it to be effective. My face never felt scrubbed clean like it has with any of the numerous other facial scrubs I’ve used over the years.Second, after washing the Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub off my face, I was left with a waxy, oily film that just wouldn’t come off with warm water. I ended up re-washing my face with hot water and a non-Burt’s Bees facial wash. Unbelievably, it still didn’t feel completely free of the weird waxy, oily residue so I then used an astringent, which finally removed all traces of it from my face. And just to show you that I’m very fair and was even hopeful of a better outcome, I tried it again with the same results.
Unfortunately, the nasty, water-resistant residue was a dealbreaker for me. I use facial scrubs to get my face feeling very clean, not covered with some weird film that doesn’t want to wash off. The verdict? Burt’s Bees Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub is not a product I would recommend and thus it gets a big pan.

Top 5 Fashion Blunders for Men to Avoid
Forbes recently wrote about designer Pepper Foster as he remembered a time he visited Aspen and saw a grown man dressed in a puffy down ski suit.
“The moral of that story,” he says, “is what is cute on kids does not necessarily translate into a good look for adults!” “I think the biggest mistake is that people–primarily men–make is that they think that when the weather gets cold all they need to worry about is staying warm, and they don’t bother trying to look good,” says Pepper Foster. “Trust us. You can do that and still look good.”

Cold weather does not mean to throw away all your fashion sense. What woman would want to be seen arm-in-arm next to a man dressed like a nerd?
5 Fashion Blunders to Avoid
#1 Don’t rely on only one coat.
Invest in several jackets for different types of weather and environments. If you have a business meeting, throw on a wool toggle coat over the suit. On warmer days, a heavier weight sport coat can be worn casually with a pair of slacks and dress shoes for a business-casual meeting, or with a pair of jeans.
#2 Don’t forget a stylish hat!
Scarves and hats are an excellent way to express your style. Stark & Legume Hats sport the Stetson® – a nostalgic holdover fedora from the ’30’s, or Eddie Bauer has a wonderful winter fleece scully, specially treated to repel water and resist stains.
#3 Don’t embarrass yourself with wearing rubbers, or galashes.

For those looking to walk around in the post-snow slush, invest in a pair of rugged leather boots for business. Arthur Beren has a great sale on Bruno Magli boxer-style quarter high boots in soft nappa leather with a rubber traction sole for ice. The normal price is $375, on sale for $187.50.
#4 Don’t wear cheap looking wool or knit gloves.
Invest on top quality leather gloves, lined in fur. They will keep your hands warm and look great with a business suit.
#5 Cashmere is in … rayon is out!
On casual days at the office, if the weather warrants wearing sweaters, try a traditionally handsome, lush alpaca v-neck pullover for only $135 by Peruvian Connection. A great value on a cotton/cashmere v-neck sweater Or, wear a button down shirt underneath a v-neck cashmere sweater.
Rayon and polyester sweaters can be spotted a mile away … they look cheap and unprofessional.
According to Andy Gilchrist, author of The Encyclopedia of Men’s Clothes, “Once you get something that is functional, and a good quality piece, you are going to feel good in it and know you look good in it as well. Outerwear like a great coat, a scarf or a hat is another mode of expression for yourself.”

The Police Reunion Rumors Heat Up
« Koopa Make UK Chart History | Patti Smith’s Rock Hall Induction Ruffles Some Feathers »
Stereogum Main
January 15, 2007
We admittedly got giddy as soon as we heard the unconfirmed reports that Gordon, Stewart, and Andy were (finally) gonna give us a reunion tour. Unfortunately, there’s been little to support those rumors in the weeks since. Which is why we’re psyched to read this report from the fair and balanced folks over at Fox News:
The signs are strong, with enough clues available so that even Colonel Mustard could figure it out. Here’s one: Yesterday, former Policemen Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland were guests, with their families, at a Malibu birthday party for Sting’s better half, Trudie Styler. Their appearance caused quite a stir. And on Thursday night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Sting dedicated a lute version of “Message in a Bottle” to the pair of former comrades who happened to be seated in the auditorium.
…
Insiders say that Sting’s former reluctance to rejoin his mates is gone now that he’s accomplished pretty much everything he could in his solo career, at least for the moment.
Sorta makes sense. A collection of Elizabethan lute compositions would be last on our list too. For more updates, keep it right here: your #1 source for unconfirmed Police reunion rumors.

The Stones of the Aztecs
The Stones of the Aztecs
The Aztecs originated from the Atzlan lands of North Mexico, where they were a humble people just managing to scrape an existence together. About 700 years ago their great Prophet Tenoch guided the Aztecs from their homelands and headed into Anahuac, also known as the Valley of Mexico.
Tenoch had a vision in which he was guided by Huitzilopochtli to search for a site in Ahhuac near to a lake. Huitzilopochtili told him that the site would be indicated by an Eagle perched upon a cactus, growing from a rock or cave surrounded by water. Sure enough Tenoch found an Eagle perched on a catus on a swampy island in the middle of Lake Texcoco.
Driven by their Prophet Tenoch and the messages from the great god Huitzilopochtili the Aztecs undertook the difficult task of building their new city. They began the construction of Tenochtitlan in 1325. As the City grew so did the skill and creativity of the Aztec artisans. By 1376 the city had become a magnet, attracting all kinds of people to unite under the Aztec banner. Temples were built and they honoured the gods for their kindness.
Soon the Aztecs turned their skills to the delicate work of carving crystals and precious metals. Their favourites included Turquoise, which was highly abundant in the local area. The Aztecs believed this stone was linked to the Sun, who according to legend chased the Moon and Stars from the sky with the help of a Turquoise serpent. The Aztecs even named their gods after the power of their favourite Turquoise. The name of the fire god, Xiuhtecuhtli, means “ master of turquoise “ and the name of their god of war, Vitzilopochtili, means “ prince of turquoise.”
Turquoise can come in a variety colours from green to blue to white. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is a type of turquoise available today, which has the most vibrant blue colour. White turquoise is very rare and can be found occasionally in Native American Jewellery. The finest native American jewellery exhibits amazing skill and inlays many different stones into Silver and gold. The Zuni tribe truly demonstrate the quality of carving that is still inspired today by the great Aztec craftsmen.
Turquoise is an amazing stone with a delightful energy. Turquoise encourages us to speak our minds and also to live our lives and dreams to the full. Turquoise encourages us to be more creative both in our thinking and our actions. It soothes the nervous system and the throat and sharpens the sight. This stone is great to wear regularly, especially when we are under the weather and in need of a little protection. Continued use of turquoise will bring about an increased positivity, greater compassion and increased joie de vivre.
It is no wonder that being surrounded by the largest and finest Turquoise in the world, that creativity and skill blossomed so artfully in the Aztec civilisation. The Aztecs also loved to work with Obsidian, especially rainbow and gold sheen obsidian. They carved the most amazing statuettes and faces inlaid with Turquoise and Pink Coral. The finest pieces of obsidian carving come from the end of the Aztec period. Obsidian is a supremely useful stone which was used extensively by Aztec peoples. Obsidian is regularly used as knives, arrowheads, axes, bowls and jewellery. The Aztec Shaman used Obsidian mirrors to scry into. Through scrying they were able to look into the past and the future.
The abundance of Obsidian is certainly one of the reasons that that the Aztec Civilisation became so advanced. Areas that are rich in obsidian, a type of volcanic glass, have a great fire energy, which is the perfect energy for creativity to flourish and civilisation building to succeed.
The Rainbow Obsidian in Mexico is the best in the world. It is jet black in colour and when it is exposed to bright light, it is possible to see the most vivid neon colours reflected in its surface. The neon colours include pink, yellow, green, purple and gold. The rarest of colours found in rainbow obsidian is neon blue. Rainbow Obsidian brings balance and harmony and invites us to embrace all aspects of ourselves and become more whole.
It is a real shame that the Aztec King Montezuma perceived the Invading Spaniard Cortes as a friend and not the threat that he turned out to be. In the final days before the attacks of the Spanish, King Montezuma gave gifts of exquisite beauty to his foes. Montezuma gave Cortes a mask incrusted with turquoise that depicted two intertwined serpents, a crozier inlaid with a mosaic of Turquoise and also ending in a serpents head, which can now be found in the British Museum. Evidently this Turquoise and Obsidian mask was used in connection with the worship of Quaetzlcoatl. It is a tragic end to the Aztec civilisation when they believed Cortes to be a re-incarnation of their god Quaetzlcoatl. . It is easy to see that when the Spanish arrived, the Aztecs were at the height of their civilisation.

Is Sears Too Much Reality For Second Life?
Second Life is an online virtual world that has been generating an enormous amount of press over the past several months. Lately some retailers have been setting up shop in the virtual world which claims to have two million members. Now Sears is setting up a store inside the virtual world.
Providing customers with the best possible shopping experience is very important for the company and it is always looking for new and exciting ways to present products and services, says Sears Holdings’ senior vice president for direct commerce, Paul Miller.
‘The Sears Virtual Home combines the best of virtual worlds and 3D environments so customers can experience Sears’ products in a way that is closer to real life,’ he said. ‘Sears.com already provides innovative design functionality and this work with IBM in a virtual world is a logical extension of those initiatives.’
Eventually, the customers entering the store using a virtual in-game avatar will be able to see mock-ups of rooms, allowing them to experiment with furniture colours, sizes and layouts.
It is great that retailers are supporting the world. The 3-D modeling offered in Second Life may help consumers create mock-ups for a countertop or design a living room. The technology is still quite crude, but eventually this type of 3-D modeling will work.
But here’s the problem. Isn’t this really just a little too much reality for what’s supposed to be a fun online game? If you are leaving reality for a virtual world where you can do anything, then anything you can imagine you can create. Don’t you really want the very best products? Don’t you want to wear the hippest high-end fashions, drive the hottest vehicles and own the most fabulous real estate? Do you really want to create a virtual house furnished by Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Sears and wear clothes from the Gap?
If the sky’s the limit, why wouldn’t you want to wear an Armani suit or a Versace dress while you sip the finest champagne? You can relax on the deck as your $50 million yacht glides across a clear purple sea while five spectacular Suns set in the distance. No doubt your personal mermaid chorus will serenade you on your journey.
Or you could go to Sears and find a virtual washer and dryer…yawn.

Getting Ready for the Red Carpet
The Associated Press talks to stylists to find out what exactly is involved in getting a celebrity ready for the red carpet. It’s an all day-affair to look gorgeous from head to toe.
The first step? A body-enhancing airbrush tan, says spray-tanner-to-the-stars Jimmy Coco, who expects to wield his tanning wand at least 100 times before the Academy Awards. These tans do more than lend a healthy glow. They can add muscle definition where none exists, says Coco, who has worked with Eva Longoria, Jennifer Garner, Jenny McCarthy and Lara Flynn Boyle. “If they haven’t quite been to the gym, I can make it look as though they have,” he says. “I give them an even glow and lightly etch in where the muscle is.”
Next come body-shaping undergarments. Stylists swear by Spanx, a brand of bodyshapers that promise to “rescue women from love handles, waistline spillage and cellulite,” according to the company’s Web site. “They go from under your bustline to the top of your knee,” says celebrity stylist Inge Fonteyne, who has worked with models Gisele Bundchen and Adriana Lima. “It compacts all your blemishes you want to smooth out. The key is to be seamless and bumpless.”
Breasts have their own set of needs. Busty beauties who want to wear backless gowns often turn to self-sticking bras like Frederick’s of Hollywood’s new Flex Body Bra, made of adhesive-backed silicone cups that fit separately over each breast. Contoured silicone pads called “cutlets” can also be slipped into a bra to give smaller busts a boost.
*****
Tape is still a critical part of a stylist’s toolbox. Surgical (or even electrical) tape can be wrapped beneath the breasts, squashing them together to create cleavage. But double-stick tape is even more popular. Stylists use it to hold spaghetti straps in place, keep loose dresses close to the skin and prevent plunging necklines from becoming pornographic. Before companies made special two-sided tape for fashion use, stylists relied on a brand of toupee tape called Topstick.
Natural fabrics are easily marred by sweat, so stars plan ahead to keep palms and armpits from perspiring. “With a silk dress, anything you touch will make a stain,” Fonteyne says. “One drop spreads like it’s the ocean under your arm.” One solution is botox, which paralyzes overactive glands to temporarily stop sweating. Another is Drysol, a prescription treatment Fonteyne swears by that “dries up” sweat glands.
Then there’s the hair. Stars weren’t born with the lush manes you see on the red carpet. It’s all about extensions, says Hollywood hairdresser Michael Shaun Corby, creative director for Alterna haircare. “Celebrities get extensions like crazy for Oscar season because they want their hair to be thicker,” he says.
And don’t forget the airbrushed makeup — as more and more people get HDTV, stars are having a harder time hiding wrinkles and acne scars which are all magnified in horrifying detail in high-def. After the stars get home, off come the chicken cutlets, the extensions that haven’t already fallen out, the fake eyelashes (J.Lo prefers mink ones from Shu Uemura), the Spanx, the industial-grade girdles (which male stars also wear) and the sky-high stilettos. No wonder so many celebs are addicted to the painkiller Oxycontin: being beautiful can actually be quite painful.
Although, now that we think of it, Jennifer Aniston always looks great whether she’s on the red carpet on walking on the beach with her dogs. But she’s clearly an exception: the paparazzi evidence shows that many celebs don’t looks so great without the help of a task force of stylists. One pop singer with an aversion to panties comes immediately to mind.

Even She Looks A Little Horrified
January 15th, 2007 by Laura
I’m very confused by Cameron Diaz’s outfit at The People’s Choice Awards. She’s just broken up with Justin Timberlake after 4 years, which I’m not even going to pretend to be sad about, and she’s at the first big major photo op after said break-up. The boy’s just left her, and he’s going to see her tonight. Usually, when faced with this situation, a girl goes one of two routes.
Either she is so utterly devastated and bereft down to her very soul that getting dressed, or even brushing her hair, seem like very minor considerations. This is often accompanied by dead eyes and bad breath. Vince Vaughn did it perfectly at this very event, if you need an example.
Or she puts space-shuttle-type resources toward looking effing fabulous and dresses for that stupid event like it’s the freaking Oscars. She drags her girlfriends around town for a solid week looking for the absolute hottest dress and most killer shoes, she gets fulling coiffed and facialed and waxed, and she flirts and laughs like it’s the best day of her damn life.
Cameron Diaz did not go either of these routes.

She seems to be subtly trying to drive him to drink, in a dress that looks like those cheaply overdecorated matching martini-glass sets from Cost Plus World Market. It’s an interesting tactic, Cameron, but if JT has moved on to the lusciousness that is Scarlett Johanssen as the rumors say, you’d have been better off downing a couple of those martinis yourself, at home. Without brushing your hair.
